Bluegrass music from the USA

Katie's Dad, 'Travis', came into room 12 today and shared some traditional 'bluegrass' music with us.

Here are some instruments that are used to play bluegrass music:

Travis showed us a mandolin. It has eight strings but is similar to a violin which has only four strings.

It is played using a pick (like a guitar).

The mandolin was brought to the USA long ago by the Scottish and Irish people.

Travis played us a  Scottish reel, some jazz and some rhythm. We stood up and did some 'clogging', (dancing).

People would gather together in the evenings on porches and play to relax and unwind.
Bluegrass music was also played in Spring to celebrate 'planting', and in Autumn to celebrate 'the harvest'.

Thank you Travis for sharing bluegrass music from The USA with us.
