Star Lab

We were so lucky today to visit an inflatable planetarium in the hall.
We went inside and looked up at a big movie screen on the roof.

The stars whizzed past and we looked at planets and constellations.

We hope we can visit again soon.

Messages from space

Today we imagined that we were out in the Solar System. We wrote a message back to Earth on a shooting star.
I just got in contact with an alien!

Yay! I found Lucy and we found treasure.

Star constellations

A constellation is a group of stars that form a picture. You often need to use your imaginations to see them.
Look at the constellations we made.

Can you see 'The Southern Cross', 'Orion the Hunter' or 'Scorpius'?

Can you guess what planets these are?

Children used adjectives in their writing today to describe some clues for you.
It is huge and brown and has 63 moons.

I am far away from the sun and I am blue.

Learning the order of the planets

Today we created an acronym with Miss Maxwell to help us to remember the order of the planets.

We made up some actions to help us remember our funny acronym poem.
Look at our planets we made for the classroom wall. It's looking more and more like a Solar System in Room 12.
The sun sure is gigantic!

The Solar System song

We are learning about the planets in our Solar System. They all orbit the sun. We are learning what order they go in.

Exploring night and day

We took turns going into a space den to explore how the sun shines on the Earth.

We used a torch as The Sun and rotated The Earth.

We thought about what equipment Astronauts use when they study and explore The Solar System.

We made telescopes from old tubes and used them to look closely at things around the classroom.

Exploring the sun

How can we find out where the sun goes?

"We could ask a Scientist", said James.
"We could look on the internet", said Jordan.
"We could watch a TV programme", said Oska.
"We could watch the news", said Ilyssa.
"We could read a book about space", said Dominic.
"We could look in the newspaper", said Katie.

Miss Maxwell read a book full of facts about the sun but it didn't tell us anything about where the sun goes at night.

We then looked on the internet to watch how the Earth moves around the sun. Click on the picture below to watch the sun (set time to a month).

We then went outside with chalk and drew a sun on the ground and pretended we were the Earth orbiting around it.

So what did we learn about the sun?

"The sun doesn't go anywhere! it stays still in space", said Mohamed.
"The Earth spins around the sun", said Jordan.
"The sun is made of hot gas", said Oska.

We're going to the moon song

Questions about space

Dan the flying man

After reading our big book we wondered what Dan the flying man might need if he were going to fly up into space.
We began inventing and creating rocket ships and devices to help him get into out of space.

Common features were boosters, safe compartments for Dan to sit so he doesn't fall out, and fire blasters to destroy any approaching rocks that might be floating about in space.
